AlphaRet Clearing Serum
by skinbetter science

For skin that leans oilier or blemish-prone, but still wants the renewal benefits of a retinoid. AlphaRet Clearing Serum builds on skinbetter science's patented AlphaRet Technology — a double-conjugated retinoid paired with lactic acid — and adds salicylic acid (a BHA) that slips into pores to help dissolve the oil and debris that dull clarity. The result is a single evening step that works to refine and clarify, without the dryness or flaking often associated with retinoids.

Worn nightly, it helps visibly improve skin clarity, soften the look of enlarged pores and reduce surface shine, leaving a smoother, more even complexion by morning. Zinc PCA helps keep oil in balance, while niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and a soothing botanical blend keep skin hydrated and calm — so a clarifying routine never feels stripping.

A retinoid serum considered enough for blemish-prone skin to wear every night.

The ingredients, and what they do

  • AlphaRet (retinoid + lactic acid) — the core technology, supporting the look of renewal with a gentler tolerability profile
  • Salicylic acid (BHA) — oil-soluble, so it works inside the pore to help refine clarity and the appearance of pore size
  • Zinc PCA — helps balance oil on blemish-prone skin
  • Niacinamide & sodium hyaluronate — support moisture and a smoother-looking surface
  • Bisabolol, ginger root & algae botanical blend — calming botanicals that help soften the look of redness
  • Green tea (Camellia sinensis) extract — gentle antioxidant support

The evidence
AlphaRet Clearing Serum is supported by a published, dermatologist-led clinical study in people with mild-to-moderate blemish-prone skin. Over 12 weeks of nightly use, the appearance of skin clarity improved by a mean of around 50%, and the look of pores by roughly 25%, by week 12 — with any adverse effects reported as mild and short-lived, and high overall satisfaction with the look and feel of skin.

How to use
Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin in the evening, avoiding the eye area. If you're using a moisturiser, let the serum dry first, then layer your moisturiser over the top; if not, this can be your final evening step. Because the formula contains an AHA and a retinoid, a mineral-based broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every morning is essential.

Please note: Contains a retinoid and an alpha hydroxy acid. AHAs can increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun; use sun protection daily and for a week afterwards. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning pregnancy, speak with your doctor before use. If you're layering other exfoliating products, introduce gradually to keep skin comfortable.
